Worcester – City Manager Edward M. Augustus announced today that the city will host a groundbreaking ceremony next week at Coes Knife Park in preparation for the move of the historic Stearns Tavern to the site.
WHAT: Groundbreaking Ceremony
WHERE: Coes Knife Park, corner of Coes and Mill streets, Worcester
WHEN: 9 a.m., Tuesday, June 21
With help from more than 25 local companies providing in-kind donations of work, the City will move the historic Stearns Tavern from its current site at 651 Park Ave. to the Coes Knife site later this summer. The tavern, one of the oldest buildings in Worcester and listed on the National Historic Register, was set to be demolished until the City and its partners, including Preservation Worcester, stepped in.
At Coes Pond, the city will create a four-season, multi-generational park and universally accessible playground, and the Stearns Tavern will be turned into a workforce training , education and community center overseen by Seven Hills Foundation which will occupy the first floor and operate a café and perform ordinary maintenance of the park and building on a year-round basis.
Drilex Environmental was involved with drilling soil samples to make sure that the soil will be strong enough so the building won’t sink.
